Sunday 8th of May 2011, Loughlinstown, Dublin was the venue for the All Ireland Handball Championship Finals.

Undefeated Dublin International HC awaited ever improving UCD HC. DI HC was odds on favourite, but UCD led by Alex Markovic and DI HC player on loan to UCD, Chris O’Reilly weren’t going to hand over the trophy without a fight. DI HC played without missing top men, Hischem Seffroun, Marius Deac and Ladislav Marec. A good crowd gathered to see the showpiece game of the season.

Dublin International started the game brighter and with aggressive defence switching between 5-1 and 6-0 systems. After 10 minutes the scoreboard showed Marko Brezac 5 – UCD 2. Jasmin Nukic Added another two before the rest of the team joined in. It looked like total demolition was on the card, but UCD fought back and fought hard, not allowing DI HC to peel off too far. Halftime result was 12 -9 to The Internationals. Good goalkeeping on both sides made sure the score count was low. First 15 minutes of the second half continued in the same style as the first. DI HC controlling the game with three to six goals lead, but never peeling off. Than Gintaras Janulevicius provided the spectators with one man show, earning himself the man of the match title. His shots and passes were finding the target with great precision and ease. UCD tried to press on, but just did not have the firepower to stop experienced European Cup veterans of Dublin International.

In the end the score of DI CH 33 -23 UCD, does not look flattering for UCD who presented a better display than the final score depicts.

IOHA final 2011
2011 All ireland Handball Final

In absence of IOHA president Fintan Lyons, which is becoming a regular feature, IOHA Secretary Michael Moloney presented DI HC captain Tomas Martinonis, with the winner’s trophy. Even the new General Manager of IOHA did not bother making the appearance at the most important game of the season. After a great day this disrespect for our club by IOHA leaves a bad taste.

The Fundraiser and celebration

The good people of The Workman’s club (Paddy, Karl, Karen and staff) gave us the venue for our gathering. Another group of good people from Silken rock band provided us with a fantastic night of entertainment. DI HC wishes to thank everybody for supporting us in buying raffle tickets and t-shirts and everyone who came to make our night great.

In between the sets of great tunes, Young Star of The Year award went to Jasmin Nukic, while Tomas Martinonis collected Player of the Year Award.
